What’s the first step?
The first step is to reach out to me via email or phone to schedule a free 30-minute consultation. During this consultation you will have an opportunity to tell me a little about your concerns, and what you are looking to accomplish in speech therapy. I will answer any questions you have and share with you more about my approach in supporting you and/or your child. Most people I speak to tell me that they feel less fear, anxiety, or concern after speaking with me during this initial phone call. I am confident that you or your child can make the positive changes you want.
What can I expect in our first session?
The first session is mostly a “get to know you” type of session and generally lasts 45-50 minutes. If you are bringing your child in, I prefer to have at least one parent join us. I encourage your child to bring at least one or two favorite toys, games, books, stuffed animals, etc. Something they like to talk about, play with, or that they find comforting. I take a naturalistic approach that is guided by your child. We will play with and talk about whatever your child wants to. During this play time I will be making informal observations about your child’s speech and language and may also incorporate some trial therapy. During an initial visit I may also administer a formal assessment for articulation or fluency.
Our first session will provide both you and I the opportunity to get to know each other a little bit more. You will have an opportunity to share more about yourself, what your goals for therapy are, what has or hasn’t worked in the past if you’ve had speech therapy before. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions that you may have. We may do some trial therapy where we explore a few different strategies that many people find helpful. I like for my adult clients to be very much in the driver seat. We will work together to develop and implement a plan that works for you.
